Favorite Trip Planning Tools

Family Days Out - While I don’t really love the layout of the site, I do like how easy it is to bring up a list of things to do that are close to a city we will be traveling through.

iExit app - great for last minute changes when the kids are ravenous.

Association of Children’s Museums - we buy a membership to a children’s museum every year and I always pay a little extra so that we can have the membership that offers reciprocity.  This site lists every museum that is part of its association, but also allows you to find those that offer reciprocal (usually 50% off) admission.

Association of Zoos & Aquariums - same deal as the museums.  While memberships can seem expensive upfront, I find that they pay for themselves in 2-3 visits, plus offer savings at other locations.  A win-win in my opinion.

Chick-fil-a - this is my favorite family-friendly fast food stop.  I would pick this over McDonald’s any day of the week, but I like that both sites allow you to look for locations with a play ground.  A word of caution, always call to confirm.  We once drove fifteen minutes off the freeway, with the camper in tow, only to find out that the website was incorrect.  Spare yourself the trouble and make the call.

Trip Advisor - I browse the attractions for each city and sometimes find things that I wouldn’t have otherwise known about.

Meetup - this one is hit or miss.  I have had some luck finding a mom’s club or playgroup, and reaching out to them through email.  I always try to be very clear about our situation and what I’m looking for.  I’ve had a few kind responses with great ideas for play or food on our trip.

Google - I spend a lot of time googling key words for each city I think we will stop in.  My usual searches terms include the name of the city and then
parks
parks and recreation
kids activities
things to do with kids in

I find that city employees are very friendly when you explain that you’ll be coming for a visit.  I ask about parks with play grounds, restaurants, indoor play spots etc, and people are very forthcoming with information.  When in doubt, find the city’s page and send an email.
